Why do chickens run?

They're always in such a terrific hurry!

And not because they're hungry (they are free-range, but they get a LOT to eat because they also have access to the compost pile), although perhaps they're always hungry–perhaps that's just built into chicken DNA. They are ridiculous creatures.
